Pride Month in Chicago is a time of celebration, visibility, and community. It is also a meaningful time to check in with yourself and to consider what kind of support helps you live more fully as who you are. For many people across Chicago, that support includes a therapist who understands their identity from the start, so the work can begin without first having to explain or defend who they are.
At Bergen Counseling Collective, we provide identity and gender affirming therapy in Chicago for queer, trans, nonbinary, polyamorous, and kink communities. This Pride Month, we want to share what affirming care actually looks like, why it matters, and how to find a therapist who is a genuine fit.
What “Affirming” Really Means in Therapy
The word affirming gets used often, so it helps to be specific. Affirming therapy is care that treats your identity, relationships, and lived experiences as valid and worth supporting, not as problems to be analyzed or corrected.
In practice, that means a few things. You should not have to teach your therapist the basics of your community or justify your relationship choices. Your gender, orientation, and relationship structure are starting points for the work, not topics you have to defend. The focus stays where it belongs, on your goals, your well-being, and the challenges you actually want help with.
In many traditional settings, LGBTQ+ clients carry the quiet burden of educating their provider. Affirming care removes that burden so your energy can go toward growth instead of translation.
Why Vocal Allyship Still Matters
It is worth naming the history here, because it explains why affirming care is not just a kindness but a necessity. For much of the twentieth century, the mental health field itself treated being gay as a sickness. Homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual until 1973, which means generations of LGBTQ+ people were diagnosed, pathologized, and pressured to change for nothing more than being who they were.
That history has not fully closed. So-called conversion therapy, a practice that every major medical and mental health organization has condemned as ineffective and harmful, still operates in parts of the country and has left deep and lasting wounds. Illinois has prohibited conversion therapy for minors since 2016, yet the legacy of these practices lingers. For many people, picking up the phone to contact a therapist does not feel automatically safe, because the same profession that is meant to help has, within living memory, caused real harm.
We hold that history with humility, and we believe affirming providers have a responsibility to be vocal allies rather than silent ones. Being affirming is not a passive label on a website. It means actively standing against stigma, naming the harm that has been done, and making it unmistakably clear that here, your identity will never be treated as something to fix. Every person who reaches out to us, of any age, is met with respect for exactly who they are.
Why Affirming Care Matters for LGBTQ+ Chicagoans
Pride celebrates how far the community has come. At the same time, members of the LGBTQ+ community often navigate higher levels of discrimination, stigma, and social barriers, which can contribute to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
Many people also face family rejection, religious harm, workplace discrimination, and the ongoing difficulty of finding inclusive healthcare. Therapists describe the cumulative weight of these experiences as minority stress, and it is real. Affirming therapy offers a space to process that stress, build resilience, and reconnect with self-compassion.
Our team supports clients through:
- A safe, judgment-free space where your identity is honored rather than questioned
- Support for gender exploration, transition, and affirming your authentic self
- Tools for healing from minority stress, discrimination, and religious harm
- Help navigating coming out and relationships with family, partners, and community
We also support clients working through religious and purity culture harm, which can shape identity and self-worth in lasting ways.
Affirming Support for Every Relationship Structure
Affirming care extends to how you love and partner. If you are in a polyamorous, open, or ethically non-monogamous relationship, you may have met therapists who held bias toward non-traditional relationships or simply lacked the understanding to help.
We take a different approach. We recognize polyamory and consensual non-monogamy as valid, healthy relationship styles, and our couples and relationship counseling supports clients in building clear communication, setting boundaries and agreements, working through jealousy and attachment, and navigating relationship transitions. Whether you are new to non-monogamy or restructuring an existing relationship, you will not have to explain or defend your choices in order to get real support.
LGBTQIA+ Couples Counseling
Every relationship has its own rhythm, and queer relationships carry both shared joys and particular pressures. You may be coming out at different paces, blending families, facing relatives who are not on board, or carrying the weight of minority stress into your relationship without meaning to. Couples counseling gives you a space to set that weight down together and to build the connection you actually want.
Our work with LGBTQIA+ couples starts from a place of understanding, so you will not spend your first sessions explaining your relationship or defending who you are. We draw on the Gottman Method, an approach grounded in decades of research on what helps partnerships thrive, to help you strengthen communication, repair after conflict, deepen intimacy, and move through the transitions that every relationship meets along the way.
We welcome couples of all genders, orientations, and relationship structures, including same-gender couples, partners at different points in their transition, and relationships that do not fit a single mold. You can meet with us in person at our Ravenswood office or online anywhere in Illinois. When you are ready, you can schedule a free consultation to see whether we are the right fit.
Gender Exploration, Transition, and Support Letters
Gender is a journey, and it looks different for everyone. Whether you are questioning, actively transitioning, or affirming an identity you have known for years, therapy can offer steady, compassionate guidance along the way.
When appropriate, we also write letters for gender-affirming care. We use an informed consent approach, and we talk through requirements, timelines, and coordination with your medical providers so the process feels clear and collaborative rather than gatekept.
What Affirming Therapy Looks Like at Bergen Counseling Collective
Our practice sits in the Ravenswood neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side, a short distance from Andersonville, Lincoln Square, and Uptown. Clients can meet with us in person at our Ravenswood office or through telehealth available anywhere in Illinois, which can make affirming care easier to access no matter where you live in the state.
Our clinicians draw on evidence-based approaches matched to your goals, including Internal Family Systems and cognitive behavioral therapy for individual work, and the Gottman Method for couples. Care is always collaborative. As our founder puts it, healing is not a solitary path, it is a collective one, and that belief shapes everything we do.
We are also deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core part of our mission, not an afterthought. We are in network with BCBS PPO, Aetna PPO, and UBH/Optum PPO, and out-of-network and self-pay options are available as well.
